CollageCenter • Feb 09, 2015

Ah, Valentines Day

The romance, the roses. The hype, the expectations. Either you’re excited about Feb. 14th, or it makes you cringe. There’s not a lot of middle ground. Is another romantic candle light dinner on the menu again this year? Or are you hanging out alone or with a group of friends? If you’re single, here are some ideas to make the day more bearable. If you’re over the traditional Valentine’s fare, we’ve got a few ideas for a Valentine’s date that won’t end with a visit to Collage.

Alternative Valentine’s Dates:

Get Creative

We don’t mean try to come up with a creative way to have the same old Valentine’s date. We mean be creative. Are you artistic? Why not plan an evening of painting, pottery or photography. Both Corky Creations Paint and Sip in Kearney and the Happy Brush in Grand Island are having a special Valentine’s Event if you want to give paining a try.

Go On An Adventure

Tell your date to take a hike, no really. An evening walking or biking either Kearney or Grand Island’s  historic trails under the stars is a great option. And if the weather cooperates, make a snowman or snow angels. Speaking of stars, if the night sky is your thing maybe an early Valentine’s Date at the UNK Bruner Hall Planetarium would be fun.

Take in a Play

Why not spend the evening at the theater? The Kearney Community Theater and Grand Island's the GILT, performs multiple times throughout the year. If you want to take a longer roadtrip; the Lied Center in Lincoln and the Orpheum in Omaha usually have a show around Valentine's Day.

LOL

If you’re looking for a laugh, you might want to check out any local comedy shows happening in the area.

Have a Sporting Good Time

If you and your date are into sports, what better way to spend the day than at the Heartland Hoops Classic?

Planning one of these alternative Valentine Dates allows you to step out of the box and get creative for you special valentine. This also gives you time to plan ways to keep yourself out of situations that put you at risk for an unexpected pregnancy or a STD. At Collage we want you to have a fantastic Valentine’s Day and we want you to stay safe. But if you find yourself in need of help, you know where to find us.

Let's have an honest talk about something crucial but often overlooked: understanding potential exposures to sexually transmitted diseases, sometimes referred to as infections (STD/STIs). Have you ever wondered, "How many people have I really been exposed to?" It's a valid question, especially when it comes to protecting your sexual health. You might assume that since you've only had sex with a few partners, you haven't been exposed much. But the reality is more complex than that. It's easy to underestimate how quickly potential exposures can add up. Even if you've only had a few partners, each person you're exposed to has a unique sexual history. The potential for indirect exposure from your partners can quickly grow. This is a sobering thought, but it highlights the importance of knowing your status and how to prevent exposure. Here’s a tool to learn the number of possible exposures you’ve had: https://collegestats.org/interactives/sexual-exposure-calculator . So, how can you use this information to protect yourself? Recognize that the most effective method of preventing STDs entirely is to refrain from sexual activity. Additionally, being in a mutually monogamous relationship, like marriage, will ensure you won’t contract an STD. Understand that communication is key. Statistics reveal that individuals aged 15 to 24 represent 50% of all new STD cases, stressing the importance of honest discussions with your partners about sexual history and making informed decisions regarding your sexual health. 1 Get tested. The CDC recommends getting tested annually if you aren’t in a mutually monogamous relationship, meaning you or your partner have had other partner(s). 2 Many STDs don't show symptoms right away, so you might not even know you're infected. Getting tested can help you detect infections early and get the treatment you need. At Collage, we offer testing and treatment for both chlamydia and gonorrhea at no cost to you. We want to do what we can to equip you to make informed decisions because together, we can reduce the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and live healthier lives.
